Common Acupuncture Questions and Answers

1. What is Japanese acupuncture?

Japanese Acupuncture utilizes the knowledge from traditional acupuncture along with modern clinically proven techniques to strengthen the body, to move the stagnation that can cause pain and to balance the meridians of the body. It promotes health and healing in a subtle and profound manner. In general the needles for Japanese Acupuncture are inserted only very shallowly into the body. The core techniques of the Japanese Toyohari Association require only a gentle touch or slight indentation of the skin with a soft silver needle.

2. What are "Child Friendly Techniques"?

I use the term child friendly techniques for treatment methods that do not require the insertion of needles. Gentle touching techniques, specialized tools that stroke but do not pierce the skin, magnets and warming techniques are all included in this category.

3. What is Qi gong? And why would I practice it?

Qi gong is a Chinese exercise form that aids health by promoting the free and balanced flow of qi in the body. It involves gentle movements coordinated with one’s breath and mind. It is performed in a slow and meditative fashion and is suitable for all ages.

4. Will acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture uses very fine solid needles. In general they are inserted painlessly but every patient’s sensitivity is different and may even vary from treatment to treatment. If there is pain associated with the insertion of the needle it is generally transitory. If you have questions or ongoing discomfort you should inform your practitioner.

5. Is acupuncture safe?

The use of sterile needles for insertion is the standard of care in this country. The chance for infection is extremely rare. The placement of the needle, location and depth, in the hands of a trained and licensed practitioner is also extremely safe.

6. What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can treat a variety of disorders. The World Health Organization recognizes its effectiveness for Ear, Nose & Throat disorders, Respiratory disorders, Gastrointestinal disorders, Circulatory disorders, Urogenital disorders, Gynecological disorders, Musculoskeletal disorders and Psychoemotional and Neurological disorders (Source: Blue Poppy Press). In addition the National Institute of Health recognizes the effectiveness of acupuncture to treat pain.

7. How should I prepare for my treatment?

Wear loose clothing to allow your practitioner access to the acupuncture points, especially on your arms and legs up to the elbows and knees. Have a light meal or snack shortly before your treatment. It is best to have neither an empty nor a too full stomach. And drink some water so you are not dehydrated.

8. What should I do during the treatment?

Try to relax. Ask any questions that you have. Let your practitioner know if there are places where you are sensitive to touch, do not want to be touched or do not want exposed. Try not to move suddenly. If you need to move let your practitioner know so that any needles that would be affected can be removed.

9. What should I expect from the treatment?

Most people find the treatments very relaxing. This can often be a sign that the treatment is working. Patients respond differently to their treatments. Some get almost immediate relief of some of their symptoms. Others have more relief during the 24 – 72 hours after their treatment. Progress is often step-wise over the course of several treatments. Complaints may disappear gradually or return and then go away for longer and longer intervals with each subsequent treatment. Generally you should feel better following your treatment.

10. How many treatments will it take?

This depends on the nature of your problem, whether it is chronic or acute and how well you respond to each treatment. After evaluating your problem your practitioner will discuss a plan for your treatment with you.
